Sport (Career-Oriented Participation)

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual likely to undertake a career as a player at a regional, State/Territory level which may enable match-payments, prize money, grants and/or endorsements to form the primary source of their income.

Those undertaking this qualification should hold a scholarship holder with an Institute of Sport, a member of a State/Territory or national team, squad or development program, a national or State/Territory talent development program or a member of a second tier national competition. Likely functions for someone with this qualification include training for events, assessing competitors and conditions at venues and consulting with coaches to determine appropriate strategies, competing and undertaking promotional duties.

This qualification is only suitable for athletes who are likely to make a career out of playing sport. Areas of study include training for events under the guidance of coaches to improve fitness, skills and mental preparation, assessing other competitors and conditions at venues, deciding on strategies in consultation with coaches, playing in competitions, undertaking promotional and media duties, running junior coaching clinics, arranging financial sponsorship or contracts.

This qualification is only for athletes likely to make a career out of playing sport.

As a consequence, the athletes undertaking this qualification should be:
  • an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder; or
  • a State/Territory Institute/Academy of Sport scholarship holder; or
  • a Regional Institute/Academy of Sport scholarship holder; or
  • a member of a National team, squad or development program; or
  • a member of a National or State/Territory Sporting Organisation Intensive Training Centre program or similar talent development program; or
  • a member of a national league/competition team, squad or development program; or
  • a member of a team in a second-tier national competition.
This qualification facilitates the further development of the following knowledge and skills at the national/international level:
  • training for events under the guidance of coaches to improve fitness, skills and mental preparation;
  • assessing other competitors and conditions at venues;
  • deciding on strategies in consultation with coaches;
  • playing in competitions;
  • undertaking promotional and media duties;
  • running junior coaching clinics; and
  • arranging financial sponsorship or contracts.
